Default Heater Core Removal Help

I'm in the process of removing the Heater Core Housing so I can replace the leaking Core in my '73.

As I thought it was just a simple case of removing the 7/16" headed sheet metal screws and pulling it out into the cabin area, I came across this.

One of GYSGT Hartman's quotes immediately came to mind ("WHAT IS THAT??? WHAT THE F#%* IS THAT!!"). It appears to be the wrong end of a stud [] that must be loosened from the other side of the firewall, no? If so, how does one get access to it in order to remove the housing?

Thanks Folks.
Steve

While I don't have a repair manual, look up Vettetube.com, there is a video that may help you.
With any luck Alan will answer soon.
Good Luck.

That is a stud that has a nut on the other side of the firewall. Should be a 7/16 nut as I recall and may be holding a j clip for vacuum or wire loom. If I recall correctly it's around the wiper door canister.

Thank you Paul. Video glosses over the stud in question, but really answered questions that I'm sure would have come up.

I'll start looking for it now. Didn't think it reached that far forward when looking at it from the cabin.

Thanks very very much.

And 44 years of filth to boot Paul.

Are they repairable? Guess it depends on the damage, and if owner insists on keep it all original. Economically, buying a new core is far and away the way to go, but thought I'd just ask.

Thanks again for the help.

If you have a radiator shop you trust I would see if it's repairable, atleast you know it will fit right back in. Replacements vary from what I found in fit and quality. If you go replacement have it tested before you install it to avoid any unwanted surprises at the end.

Thank you Dan for the insight on possible fitment issues. The unwanted surprises you mentioned is a terrific understatement of the repeated horrors I'd face, including the carpet cleaning thing.

Yes. Yellow striped tube goes to silver thing in above picture.
Red stripe tube goes in on top of Box just in front of silver thing. Look inside box there and you will see where it plugs in.
Good luck.
