Default Ball Joints

When you put the nut on the ball joints and line up the hole in the castle nut, is the nut supposed to be loose? When I tighten the castle nut tight it goes way past the hole for the cotter pin. Thanks

Hi m71,
No, the nut should tighten the spindle against the tapered stud of the ball joint so the nut can be torqued.
Regards,
Alan

You can see the taper.

You can just see the taper in this photo.

A little more obvious in this photo.
Thanks Alan, they are tapered but not by much. I'm going to order the correct ones from zip, these were from o'reilys.

Hi m71,
That surprises me…. I'd think even something from OR should work.
Did you run into this situation on all 4 ball joints?
The holes in the spindles haven't been enlarged in some way have they?
It's that interface…. balljoint shaft/spindle hole…. that has to be right.
Regards,
Alan

I just tried the upper one from OR, it was a 1/4 longer than the original one. I don't think the holes have been enlarged because it worked fine on the old ball joints. It was tighten farther up than the original, so the hole for cotter pin was below the nut.

You "could" use a washer or two under the nut to get the hole lined up.

I used washers but make sure they are grade 8.

Mine took two washers under the castle to get the pin to line up.

Even with washers I think it would still be to far up. The new ball joints were a 1/4 in longer.
