Default Witch well nuts for luggage rack.

I am looking at amazon for new well nuts 1/4-20, 1/2" bore. My question is if the GM replacements with a thinner collar will let the washer rub the paint? There are some from Hanson Rivet that look like a thicker collar. Cost more but could be a saving in the long haul. Please give opinion from experience. I can see that Corvette suppliers have the thin collar well nuts. My experience is they sell what they have, even if it's not quite rite.

Hi W6,
Isn't it the additional large flat black rubber washers that prevent the large ss finishing washers from contacting the paint, not the well nut?
Regards,
Alan

Yes, my rack came in a box with a sock full of screws tubes and washers. On the car are the the well nuts dry and cracked, one missing. They are rounded and say "well nut" on them. The replacements look flat. Will this be a problem?

Hi W6,
I had a luggage rack on my 71 45 years ago
I have the original hardware, but not the well nuts.
The black rubber washers are .12 inches thick.
I don't know what if anything that tells you?
My recollection is that the thickness of the lip on the well-nut was relatively the same as the thickness on the flat rubber washers.
Regards,
Alan

IIRC, aren't the mounting bolts for the luggage rack 5/16-18 bolts? The well nut flanges are under the raised portion of the washers and I think the rubber washers ID is larger than the OD of the flange.

Hi,
These are the parts from the rack I bought in 71.
The parts on racks presently being sold may be different.
The ss plate seems to be raised enough in the middle to allow for well nuts having different sized collars.
The flat black rubber washer is just slightly smaller in diameter than the plate.
Regards,
Alan
