My wife's LeBaron has a belt that would not stop squealing no matter what I did. I used belt dressing that cured the squeal for about 30 minutes before it came back worse than before. Belt dressing I learned is made of hexane to soften the rubber, but the dressing causes damage to the belt. I installed another belt and it squealed as well. I remember in high school having the same problem with a belt on a 65 mustang. Back then, I took pine sap and put a little bit on the belt. It worked. Today I got tired of listening to my wife's car squeal. I drove to a sporting goods store; went to the baseball section; and bought a stick of pine rosin. It looked like a bit tube of chap stick. I smeared it onto the belt and it quieted down the belts immensely. After about 20 more miles, the rosin apparently worked its way around the rotors. Now it makes no noise whatsoever.
Thanks, good tip. By the way, did you know about an October 20th Corvette show at Hooters (FM 1960 W @ I-45)? It's hosted by the Sam Houston Corvette Club (www.shccvette.com)
Registration: 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Trophies: 3:00 p.m.
Great lookin ride :D
Just as a suggestion it may be time for a pully replacment or check the angle of your belt. Sometimes they are different. I learned that awhile back on one of my other vehicles. That does sound like a good fix though. Thanx
Oh, I do believe the pulleys on that 1990 4-cylinder LeBaron with 150,000+ miles could use replacing. But for some reason, I just don't have the same motivation for working on it as I do my Vette. Maybe when they start having LeBaron car shows I'll get interested in it. Nevertheless, it still runs good.
Thanks for the tip--I've used the belt dressing several times without a whole lot of success. Next time I got a squeal I'll look for a pine tree or a sporting goods store.
BTW--THAT TROPHY SHOULD HAVE BEEN MINE!!!!! I'LL GET YOU NEXT YEAR, MY PRETTY!! :D
Same thing happend to me with a 98 GMC Jimmy and its serpantine. I replace the belt, tried dressing, nothing worked to get rid of the sqeak until I replaced the tensioner. Apparently they are prone to get a little cocked out of alignment with the belt. Since it's not a V-groove, the edges of the belt don't wear funny to indicate the problem.
