As I slowly go through the systems on my car I try to do things to where it won't introduce new issues. My windshield washer pump hasn't been cycled in at least 20 years in my 1970. It has the 5 port washer, so trying not to freak anything that isn't already broken. Is there a recommended way to prime or bleed the system, or make sure the pump portion is free and not frozen. I'm nut sure if there is a piston or diaphragm that pulls the fluid from the tank to the nozzles.
Hi D,
The washer pump has a piston with O ring seals and also rubber valves for the intake stroke and exhaust stroke.
If you remove the 4 screws on the valve assembly you can see the rubber valves.
BE VERY GENTLE, remember how old those plastic parts are!!!
There's good information about the pump's parts and operation in the Chassis Service Manual.
Electrical Body and Chassis beginning on page 12-38.
Regards,
Alan
There are rebuild kits available containing the rubber parts. You may have to buy 2 kits since only 70/71 pumps had the 5 ports, later pumps are all 3 ports.
