Default Should I be worried?

Everyday it's something new. While removing my driver's side exhaust manifold, I found the engine mount bolt just hanging there. It's not connected to anything, so I am surprised it hasn't fallen out. Has anyone seen this bolt work itself out? Does this mean my motor mounts are shot? Looks like I won't be driving for a bit longer...

That did not hurt the MM. Age, heat and oil might have hurt it though.

Tap it back in and put a new locking nut on it. done.

Have to admit that's a news one on me, but bolts come loose sometimes. If you have no other reason to believe there is anything wrong with the mount, I would tighten it up and go on with my life.

Hi G,
Am I seeing that one of the three 'engine mount to block' bolts has it's head twisted off?
Regards,
Alan

Yikes, is there supposed to be a bolt there? I don't have my assembly manual in front of me, but if that's the case I am super lucky that between this and the 13 year old tires, nothing catastrophic happened while bringing the car home!

Get used to it...these cars are getting very old. I have owned my 78 for 34 years and I have replaced, rebuilt, upgraded almost everything on the car and I am still not close to being done. The only items not touched yet are the trailing arm bearings and bushings (up next), the 4 speed tranny (did the clutch during the engine rebuild in 2014) and the rear diff. I touched just about every other nut, bolt, and screw....

Good news, no bolts are sheared off, and the main bolt is in tact (although very loose). It was hard to see with the exhaust in place! I noticed that I do have two different mounts from left to right. Is one better than the other? Should I replace both while my exhaust is apart?

The bottom left mount pictured is the better type, it has locking tabs so if the rubber gives up the steel tabs will still keep the engine from twisting.

Good to know, that's what I was looking for. I may just buy two of that type, and replace both. I've got a cherry picker, so it shouldn't be too bad of a job. Hopefully no more nasty surprises for a while. For those that have done motor mounts, is it one of those "more than meets the eye" type jobs?

I would buy quality mounts and ARP bolts. I put them in with BLUE lock tight, They haven't had an issue in 15 years on my truck - same motor.

I did the same on my 71 and 68. 72 has original's in good condition.

Just my thoughts..

not a gravy job if your putting in the plug wires and shields in the proper place. I unbolted mine and lifted the motor and when I put it back the front bolts on both side wouldn't line up. After fussing with it for a couple of hours I lifted it again pulled the horizontal bolt and reattached it to the block, then put the horizontal bolt back in. What should have been a gravy job wouldn't cooperate. Don't take anything for granted. Its a gravy job after its done and went smoothly. Good luck. Hope its easy and uneventful!!
