Default T.I. amplifier replacement module

Next on my list is to reinstall the T. I. ignition module. Anyone have experience with aftermarket modules that fit inside the oem amplifier housing? I've seen two types, one like Paragon sells and one that looks like a green colored circuit board with updated components. My car is an original K66 car that currently I'm running the oem distributor and a msd 6a box. I'm leaning towards the Paragon one since it works with any coil and doesn't need to use the expensive T.I. coil. I'm using a msd 8207 coil. It is the only one that fits inside the 69 distributor box using a 67 435 intake manifold. I'll have to change the harnesses since the original owner changed the plugs where the amplifier harness connects to the car harness. He made is so you would unplug the amplifier and take it with you. A somewhat crude, but effective way to prevent the engine from starting. New reproduction plug wires came with a disclaimer not to use aftermarket hi perf coils or ignition systems. Thanks.

I used the module from Paragon and it worked great with a standard non TI coil.

Thanks 69. I see you said "used" and "worked:. Do you no longer have them installed? BTW, you're avatar looks just like my engine, less the 67 manifold.

I've been using one from TI Specialty for several years. Works great, no issues. http://www.tispecialty.com/amplifiers.htm

I think You can also hide You 6al and wire it in such a way that no Judge will figure out that the TI box is just there for show.

New Lectric Limited plug wires instructions say not to use them with aftermarket hi perf coils and ignition systems, may reduce reliability and void warranty.

Electric limited and K & B Special Products are two of the makers of the replacement boards. There may be others. K & B makes the green board (green board is the best) so I've been told.

I saw that but the instructions say to use stock t.i. coil only. I have a msd coil- it is the only coil I found that fits inside the 69 distributor box with the 67 435 intake manifold. I tried a 67 distributor box to use the stock coil, but it doesn't look right on my 69.

I had the same question. This is my thread that helped.

I used the K&B special products board in my LT-1 and it's still working great after 8 years. I'd recommend it and would use it again if I needed one.

FYI - I replaced the stock board in search of better cold start performance and failed to get any improvement. I've concluded it's the big Holley that's responsible for the reluctant cold starting of the LT-1 engine.

I called K&B and they said stock t.i. coil only. Ok, for you electrical guru's these are the specs for the coil I'm using. Looks like I'll need to go with the Paragon version unless these specs are acceptable for the K&B module.

Inductance 6.9 mH
Peak current 300 mA
Primary resistance .355 OHMs
Secondary resistance 4.4K OHMs
Spark duration 220 uS
Turns ratio 70:1

The inductance seems higher than desired for best high RPM performance, but the main thing that concerns me is the turns ratio. A low ratio like that is harder on the ignition module than a conventional points type coil (with about a 100:1 turns ratio) or the stock TI coil (with about a 130:1 turns ratio IIRC).
The turns ratio takes whatever the plug arc voltage is, divides that down by the ratio, and that's the voltage that the module internal circuitry has to contend with every ignition event. The original TI coil had a high turns ratio so that it didn't blow up the germanium switching transistor or the clamping zener diode. A newer design board is probably more robust, but I would consult the manufacturer of whatever board you use, and ask them if they have any concerns about that turns ratio.

Thanks 69427. I'll call Paragon tomorrow and ask even though their website it works with any coil. And I'll also re-look at maybe figuring a way to mount the t.i. coil inside the distributor box.
