Well here's the latest.....My mechanic changed out the fuel rod....When he told me it could be this I'm like " forgive me but I never heard of a fuel rod", fuel pump yes, fuel rod, no....
Basically the fuel pump has to be taken off to get to this....When I picked up the car he showed me a photograph of what looked like two pipes....One was smaller than the other....He explained the smaller one is the broken one that was in my car.....That was the problem I was told....
To be continued.....I guess the test will be a decent highway drive of some reasonable distance with traffic....
Then, how is that you had no spark previously? Weird...
No spark? I remember the first time it did it a few seasons ago.....I was able to get it back to my garage.....Next day I go to start it, cranks but does not turn over..I tried it a few times, still no start..
A mechanic friend of mine came next day and pulled a distributor wire and determined, no spark.....Locked it up covered it and said- I'll mess with it later.....
Two days go by, I tried starting it and bamm, started right up.....
I think your problem is ignition related. I suspect your coil has been failing for some time and is just not ready to die yet. I would get a new one if it were me. Good luck!!
Took me a while to find this thread....Took the car out today , first time in 4 months, stored it properly..
Well I'm on a street waiting for AAA same problem....Cars running great, starts to sputter a bit, idle drops than shuts off....
Let it sit for a while....Won't start just won't start....Cranks fine....Won't start...
Fuel sock, fuel pump, fuel rod, cap rotor, plugs all new..... Carb checked gas tank cleaned out....Same F in problem...

Check the coil you may see it's bulging or leaking.
The scenario you describe is EXACTLY the same as what happened to me (although a '66).
I will let everyone know...My ignition is HEI....Motor is a 75 block....On your 66 I'm guessing it was easy to spot since the coil is right on top of the motor...
I just got it home and parked it....When I get a chance I have a spark tester and will see if I'm getting spark...
Payed for fuel pump, fuel sock, fuel rod and the problem still happens....Its dangerous as well....This S#%t happens at highway speed and everything shuts off .....
Ok so its a no spark condition...Put a tester on it and no spark....Having it towed to my mech.this week....3 tows in two weeks from AAA.....Glad I have the coverage..To be continued ..
