Pretty sure sending unit comes out the bottom on a 73.
I just changed the sending unit on my 69. The new fuel sock that comes on the sender cured a hard start problem I assumed was my accelerator pump on the way out (qjet carb)!!
But I bet your problem is some sort of black box (electronic control module) issue.
VERYSOON
Well I don't think it's the fuel sock either....Took the car out today and put around 110 miles on it......55 each way.....On my return trip I did hit some traffic of course on the highway....Not bumper to bumper but noticeable enough in some spots....
I get two blocks from my house and it starts sputtering,
some backfiring ,than it clears itself for a block......As I'm driving down my block it starts again....I just barely made it to my garage.....
Sooooo....Its not the fuel sock I would guess...Fuel pump is new I changed it two years ago.....

Okay. No harm, no foul. It would have caused grief at some point.
1973 with MSD 6AL. What dizzy and what coil?
IF its that red MSD POS coil, I would suspect that next. I have changed so many of those due to leaks and failures.
Some 6AL boxes get failure prone when hot. Hard to chase.
I have a MSD box tester.
Picture of the set up would help.

Ill get out in the garage over the next day or two and post up some photos....According to the specs on the engine ( it's not the original one) it's a summit HEI distributor with hot coil and fast advance curve...
Not exactly sure what that set up is..Have an idea, just not positive.....73 of course was points and not HEI.....
My 6AL is mounted on passenger side of engine above the wheel well.....Its right under the side of the hood....

I know where I would go next, but lets verify what you have. If possible, a picture inside the dizzy of the module please.
We are now assuming fuel supply is okay. Keep in mind when those filter socks go, debris can get in the pump check valves and filter, still causing the same symptoms.

Removed the cap and rotor.....Took some photos best I can.....There is oil inside near the neck of the distributor....I'm sure that's not common...If you look at the photos it's that dark ring around the beginning of the neck...Its more prevalent on the drivers side...
That dark ring below those two wires is oilhttps://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/post_thanks.php?do=post_thanks_add&p=159 4152393&securitytoken=1488133524-6fa2080017026c79219cef11f2b79f41e3d0676c

I'm at work, and will look when I get home, but I have to ask. You have the dizzy pinned with no mechanical advance, yet have vacuum advance. That correct?

I have some knowledge about timing, not totally though.....There is an advance I believe in the distributor...My mechanic welded inside the distributor as you can see.......I think that was done to set the timing for max power......I will ask him..
Not saying this is definitely it, but this is straight out of the manual:
"The MSD can be mounted in most positions, except directly upside down (if upside down, moisture or water cannot escape)."
Granted the next part says they don't want you to mount it in a glove box, and thats what I do...
Your distributor has been locked out. Was the MSD Starter Saver in there already or did your mechanic add that after locking the distributor. Curious if there is a defect in the unit that is causing a problem.
I recommend spending some time going through all of the wiring on the MSD box and the starter saver to make sure all connections are correct and secure, and remounting the MSD box.
Spark plug wire boots... inspect each one for cracks at plug.
P.S .. saw a picture of your car on another thread. If you are on Long Island, I believe I have met you in person at Bellmore train station in the past couple of years.
EDIT: With that said, SK Speed has an MSD testing machine. The next time this happens, immediately pull the box out, and run it over to the store for testing.

You identified the problem a long time ago. You had no spark. The car will idle fine with a plugged fuel sock, and there is no problem driving with 2-4 pounds of fuel pressure. It may die at cruise or under power with the plugged sock, but it will re-start and idle with that conditionk. If you have no spark, it will do as you describe. You have an ignition system problem when the ignition system gets hot. Swap out the distributor with another distributor, and bypass the MSD. Run it that way to test.

Hey Dave....
Used to swing by bellmore train station....I'm in Brooklyn and usually traffic is pretty heavy going out there during the rush...I would go every so often later on in the evening years ago......
I probably did meet you out there.....Yeah this issue is getting annoying...If you ask me it is a problem with spark instead of fuel...

Yeah I'm going to run this by my mechanic....I don't think I had this problem before I had the MSD box installed....I've owned this car for 15 years ...Can't remember when I installed the MSD box ....I know it was a few years ago.....
Well here's the latest.....My mechanic changed out the fuel rod....When he told me it could be this I'm like " forgive me but I never heard of a fuel rod", fuel pump yes, fuel rod, no....
Basically the fuel pump has to be taken off to get to this....When I picked up the car he showed me a photograph of what looked like two pipes....One was smaller than the other....He explained the smaller one is the broken one that was in my car.....That was the problem I was told....
To be continued.....I guess the test will be a decent highway drive of some reasonable distance with traffic....
