Default Harmonic Balancer for unknown 350 ?

Supposedly a 1970 350/350 but who knows....its been rebuilt. Currently has a 6-3/4? balancer but the timing cover has a tab for an 8" balancer.

Any suggestions?

There's this Chevrolet Performance balancer:

This Summit piece seems to get recommendations:

Professional Products:

Should I go 8" or 6-3/4"?

I'd open it up and see what crank is in there. Easy enough and avoids pain later.
Well, that is, unless you know how it's been rebuilt?

Hi Jim,
Originally 1970 350/350 engines were equipped with an 8" harmonic damper.
It was 1-11/16" thick.
Regards,
Alan

you can install the larger 8" dampner, 8" is the performance version any way.

you might be able to look at the back of the crank, and see a forged line down the center.
forged crank is to look for the parting lines on the counterweights. A forged piece will have a wide, irregular rough patch. A cast component (shown) will have a very sharp, well-defined line where the mold was separated.

I went from the larger balancer to the smaller version when I did my roller cam swap, because the larger balancer wouldn't clear my cloyes timing cover with the button. I haven't noticed any issues.

The cloyes cover was a huge pain for this and other reasons.

So I should check to confirm a forged crankshaft before ordering?

cast or forged crankshaft makes no difference on balancer.
