Default 1982 Corvette Half Shaft Ujoints

I have an 82 corvette with an automatic transmission. I'm putting it back together after rebuilding the rear trailing arms. I bought new half shaft ujoints from zip but when I went to put them in, they were too big. I thought maybe I ordered the wrong part, so I called our local autoparts store and they had Moog and Duralast ujoints in stock which would supposedly fit, so I bought them. Turns out, they're the same size as those I bought from Zip... to big. Do you guys think someone changed the half shafts and yolks on the car for some reason? They look old enough to be original. Any idea what ujoints might fit?

The 80 to 82 vettes with auto trans came with 1330 ujoints in the half shafts. The manual trans cars have 1350 ujoints which is probably what you were given.

I'm thinking all 82s had the 1350s. Sure you have an 82?

I have seen the side yokes for an 1982 use the manual transmission side yokes...even though ti has an automatic...teh manual transmission U-joints are the larger ones...but I have also seen then where they were not. I think GM was using up parts that had on the shelf and did not care to put the stouter side yokes in the differential. The size of the bolts that hold the straps on is a dead give away for me.

if you have a early 82 you could have the smaller u-joint from 1981 automatics.or it could have been changed.check the parts store for 1981 auto.

This may help you out....Advance Auto usually stocks the MOOG #'s 231 & 254's...

U-Joint(s) HALFSHAFT(S)
...MOOG (made in USA) non-greasable solids part #231....Halfshaft.... 1 3/16" (1.188") cap size......3 5/8" (3.625") length
...Spicer part #5-1350X.....Halfshaft non-greasable....1 3/16" (1.188") cap size......3 5/8" (3.625") length

U-Joint(s) DRIVESHAFT
...MOOG (made in USA) non-greasable solids part #254....Driveshaft... 1 1/16" (1.062") cap size......3 5/16" (3.312") length
...Spicer part #5-1310X non-greasable 1 1/16" (1.062") cap size......(3.219") length
Although there is a slight difference with the Length of the MOOG & Spicer Driveshaft joints.....3.312" compared to 3.219" a difference of 0.093", I would imagine that would not be a problem using either joint
...NAPA part# PUJ 354 (w/ 1 1/16" cap size)
...AUTOZONE DURALAST part# 1-0153DG to use in an emergency as these are 1/32" shorter in length, but same cap diameter, and made in China
...MasterPro part #380. greaseable
