Default Hood latch issue

I am cleaning up the hardware on my hood which I believe is not original because it had holes for a 427 emblem and the car is a 71 LS5. I noticed that one screw was missing on the right latch and it is because the hole in the steel plate does not align with the threaded hole in the hood. The latch plate also does not sit flat because it interferes with one of the rivets under it in the fiberglass. Were the latch assemblies different for a 427 car and a 454 car? The left side fits fine. Sorry if the photos are rotated, always seems to happen with the phone.

Hi,

The RHS hood latch and post assembly changed from early 69 to the 70's.

See this thread for your answers. BTDT!

Thanks! Looks like I have a 68 style hood and Bubba mounted a 71 style catch so it did not sit flat and only three holes were usable.

However you need to double check you have the correct male part as well.

It looks like they are new (the car is being restored) and I would bet that they are the proper ones for a 71.

Hi ST,
Typically there's a rubber cap on this hood 'stop' that cushions the hood as it's closed. (There's one on the left side too.)
You might want to install them before you adjust the latches.
Regards,
Alan

Thanks Alan, I did notice that but it will be done by the shop restoring the car. I just have the hood at home to work on it while they finish up the rest. Bubba really screwed me on this because it looks like we will have to replace all the latch components (male and female) to the 68 style, or get a hood for the 71 hardware. Not only did the mounting configuration change but the latch swing direction is different too for the passenger side.

Hi ST,
You're right!
While at a quick glance the early and later hood latches seem quite similar, they can't be interchanged.
Regards,
Alan

Hi Alan,

Remember the chat we had about being able to release the LH latch by "pushing" on the RH one? You'll notice in See Three's pics that the 68 and early 69 LH latch had a spring to keep the latch closed.

Probably why your unlatch trick doesn't work for me! I did not know that the later LH female latches did not have that spring.
