I've been doing some clutch/fork/ball stud/pilot bearing work on the hot rod and noticed my flywheel ring gear has a few nicked teeth. What if I just flip the ring gear on the flywheel, the teeth are in virgin shape from that side. Has any of the brethren done it. Should I opt for a new gear?Thoughts comments? A new SFI approved flywheel looks to be in the $230.00 range. Engine sees 6000 rpms occasionally.
If it isn't giving you issues (grinding starter drive?) I wouldn't mess with it - if a few have some jags, file the rough spots out of the teeth. The ring gear can be replaced by a shop that does engine/flywheel work if you want the same flywheel.
I wouldn't waste the money on SFI unless you are racing it and winding it constantly MHO. Steel would be safer than the stock cast flywheel in any case. In my case on a fresh rebuild, I opted for the Summit part and my old one is "stored" now.
