72 door ajar circut
My door ajar light stays on. Both switches are new but I think the wiring might be the culprit. Does anyone have a schematic handy?

On my 69 the door ajar switches are seperate from the interior light switches? Is your 72 the same? Did you remove the switch on both sides and made sure the wires are correctly connected?

Hi Blow,
The wires for the door ajar switches are a blue and a black wire.
They exit the rear lighting harness on the interior side of the left lock pillar.
The left side wires go through 2 grommets in the lock pillar before exiting in the door jamb.
The right side wires travel across the seat bulkhead and then go through the right side lock pillar in the same way as the left.
Regards,
Alan

My 72 has two switches separate from the interior light switches. I think I'm on to the issue... Only the right side is hooked up and all three wires are soldered together. Looks factory but doesn't seem correct. Blue, white and black are all attached on right side. I'm going to have to remove the quarter trim panels as the left side must have broken.

Hi b,
The courtesy lights are controlled by the switches in the hinge pillar jambs. The wires are part of the dash harness.
The door ajar warning is controlled by the switches in the lock pillar jambs. The wires are part of the rear lighting harness.
Regards,
Alan

Any idea what the harness looks like at the switches? It's been a while since I put the car together but I remember only two wires at the drivers side switch and the pass side had three. I didn't think to pull the rear wheels to gain access to wires through body mount cover. Better than pulling quarter trim!!

Hi,
Driver's side ajar switch has 3 wires.
Are you using your AIM?
The ajar switch wiring is shown in section 12.
Regards,
Alan

Unfortunately not, I moved last year and its buried in a box somewhere. I'm sure it will work as long as I know how and what color wires attach to the switch. So just so I understand the concept... All wires should attach to each switch left and right. Thus closing the circuit and turning the door ajar light off when the door closes. At this point the light just stays on with the ignition on.

Blown Z51 you have the wrong switch, blue and black wire should not be tied together,
this is why your door ajar stays on.
the switch you have shorts to gnd. when opened, your ground point is riveted to fiberglass, that switch would never work.
the correct switch when opened will short the blue and black wire together.
no need for ground.
