I am currently installing a 383 Stroker and am preparing for a hood clearance issue on my 1976 Stingray. It appears the Fly Eye air cleaners are a fire hazard. How about an air cleaner drop base? Anyone able to use that with a 14" x 1.5" air cleaner under the stock hood?

It depends on the intake you are using. Here is my ZZ383 with a RPM Air GAP intake and a 14" x 3 dropbase air cleaner. Fits just fine.
I have an Afco brand spun alloy drop base housing with a 14"x3" filter on my Edelbrock Performer RPM (same height as RPM Air Gap) under my stock '79 hood.
This cold air intake fits under hood the hood and can handle all the way up to a single plan AFR titan intake..
And has run performer, performer RPM, stock manifolds and many others..

The best drop base air cleaner I have found is the factory LT-1 open air cleaner. Its about $100 from all the usual vendors.
Its an excellent air cleaner. I recently had to ditch mine because the vent tube in the back interfered with a double pumper I put on. Works awesome with quadrajet though!
