Take the old one out and install the new one. If your concern is accessibility, remove the driver's seat...or have a child/grandchild do the job for you. Pretty easy to do.
I replaced the brake light switch in my '71 a couple of weeks ago. I wish I had thought of the idea of removing the driver's seat - that might have helped.
My technique was to open door fully, move driver's seat back as far as possible, and lie diagonally, on my back, with my shoulders on the carpet under the steering wheel and everything from my hips down outside of the car. It was not fun or comfortable. Then I switched back and forth between a wrench and my finger tips to loosen the original switch and then tighten in the replacement.
I'm 5'10" and about 160. I doubt a person any larger than me could do it, but I guess people who regularly work on cars get used to these tight spaces?
on my 77 there's a cheap looking stamped sheet metal nut on either side of the mount hole . I wound the switch in /out so I didn't damage the thread on the plastic switch shaft ,if you need to do this obviously the wires come off first, sorry for sounding like captain obvious here
I had problems with the actuating tab(on the pedal) itself coming loose and not putting enough pressure on the switch so the brake lights were staying on , I ended up pulling the whole pedal box and welding the little nut onto the pedal itself so it didn't come loose again. Overkill maybe but I couldn't get at the tab mount bolt while its in there ,steering column in the way .

My EXACT problem on my '81 right now. The bracket that holds the stop light switch is loose. My brake lights stay on unless I actually pull up on my pedal with my foot. I plan on starting to get at that darn thing today.
