Hi r,
The tachometer cable typically exits through the rubber grommet that's just to the right of the master cylinder.
The oil pressure line and the back-up light wire also exit through this grommet.
Regards,
Alan

That's where mine goes through the fire. By the way, nice color paint!
good, mines it the correct position then.
just have to wait for it to be delivered, and then squeeze hand in and un clip.
have read that you might get at it easier by going thru the wiper switch bezel...

yeah! i think it's called "Sunflower Yellow"
code 912 with std 400 black trim....
mines had a repaint sometime in a previous life and it's not quite the original colour.
slight mustard tinge to it, but if you look in the door jamb it is still correct.
when/if i get it repainted it will be back to original, (or steel cities gray)
ok, new cable arrived from supplier, but it measures 22 1/2" long. the old cable was only 20" long.
this means that it now has to bunch up a lot more.
this puts a lot of extra curves in where it comes out the firewall and joins to the dissy.
it seems to have to bend very sharp where it comes out the firewall and goes past the ign shielding.
i'm trying to keep the vac adv can pointing half way between the passengers side ign shielding upright bracket and the firewall.
now i took a lot of photos when i removed the carb n dissy, but not of the cable as i didn't thing it needing replacing at that time.
until the end fell off.
has Alan71 got a couple of photos that show where it goes around everything on his example? (hint hint)
(all of the old posts i found, most of the photos have been lost due to pb stupidity)
Hi r au,
Here are the photos showing the typical orientation for the distributor on a 350 Corvette engine with the bracket that supports the distributor shielding.
This position allows the vacuum hose for the distributor advance to clear the bracket and also puts the tachometer gear in a good orientation for the tachometer cable connection.
I think you need to get the proper length tachometer cable to ensure you don't have the problems that occur when the cable is too long.
that's only for a '68 i think
"Tachometer cable, 19 1/2" long w/black jacket and nuts on both ends, includes instruction sheet."
'72's only have the collar nut on one end.
edit
funny how every vendor seems to have the same length cables...
hasn't anybody complained before?

Hi r au,
???
I didn't realize that the 20" long cable isn't available.
You're fortunate you have someone who can shorten the longer one for you.
Good Luck!

Alan
ended up shortening the outer myself at work and will use the original inner for now.
reason, had argument with place that was suppose to do the work, they had it for 3 days, not done, was only a fill in job for them, no hurry etc...
so i cut the steel liner on pin grinder and made a hex press block to re-crimp it on.
lucky i'm a toolmaker (fitter n turner) and have access to lots of good machinery.

Reason: spelling
I know it is an old thread, but some years later, the problem with the supplier (CC / Paragon product part: 213005) is the same. Could you possibly shorten and re-crimp?
Stowing these almost 4 inches more in the car is impossible without extreme bending.

it is an old thread, let’s start a new one, please.
