I would start by reading Jim Shea's paper. http://jimshea.corvettefaq.com/?p=796

Click on his attachment.

Hi C,
You likely have it apart by now, if not…..

I'd begin by removing the 2 bolts that hold the two parts of the joint together… the 2 running parallel with the steering column.
BE CAREFUL that you don't damage the ground strap that's on one of the bolts.

Then remove the bolts that clamp each part of the joint to it's respective shaft. I then use the tip a large screwdriver in the groove of each part of the joint to spread it slightly so that I can slide it further onto the shaft.

If there's enough distance between the the end of one shaft and the end of the other you can remove each part of the joint one at a time.
But if the space is very small you'll need to wait until you remove the steering column to get the 2 pieces of the joint off their shaft.

Not a difficult task.
Good Luck.
Save that coupler…. the new joints and fasteners are nothing like the originals.

Regards,
Alan

Put the tip of the screwdriver in the slot under where the cross-bolts where. Twist the screwdriver slightly to 'open' the joint just enough for you to slide that part of the coupler on it's shaft.

Hi c,
As I said….do what you can to save it.
Originals are costly and the service replacement/reproductions are a disappointment to some folks.
Regards,
Alan
