Default 1982 speedometer / odometer issues

I am helping a friend with his 1982 speedo issues.
he has changed out his 1982 speedo for a 1979 140mph speedo.
Issues are that the odometer does not work and the needle bounces.
for the needle bounce we will change out the cable first and see if that fixes it.
For the odometer, I have searched and reviewed the many posts on this issue, and expect that it will be a worm gear issue. He still has his original 1982 speedo that was working.

Can anyone tell me if the gears from his 82 speedo will fit in the 79 speedo?

Willcox? your tech articles are extremely helpful, but I didn't see this one.

In my memory serves me correctly....the 1982 speedometer has an optic eye so the computer knows how fast it is going. It is a part of the Vehicle Speed Sensor. The 1979 speedo will not have that provision due 1979 Corvettes did not have a computer.

Good point Dub,
I didn't post any info on his car as I was only thinking about the odometer, not engine operations. The engine, computer system etc is no longer used. Now a 383 with carburetor.
Also he has cruise control, but doesn't use it or want it. We will bypass that and use one continuous cable.
I don't think this will have any effect on the odometer, as it still uses a cable from the transmission and I assume it still has the same worm gear operation as older models.

Your friend can have his gauges refaced for 140MPH or other speeds, cleaned, repaired and re-calibrated for a decent price. That is what I did on my 81 and it came out beautiful. My friend with a 75 had all his gauges refaced to OEM and they look like they came right out of the factory.

Here is a link to the place I had mine done. He does a great job.

i took a look at their website and see they will face to kph also. Could be an option but the shipping from and to Vancouver could be pricey. I will take a look for someone closer also.

I have a similar issue in my 1970: the speedo works but the odometer does not.

Is the gauge bad?

Thanks

I put a 1979 140 mph speedometer into my '82 about 15 years ago and I seem to recall the photo eye still being used.
