Default Improper Drain or Bad Dipstick?

1968 327ci. I have only changed the òil twice. Both times the dipstick shows 'overfilled' (a quart or so) after carefully adding the proper amount. I am thinking the dipstick is wrong, but woke up this morning wondering. I only raise the car from one side, just enough to get under: about six or eight inches. Do you think that angle is enough to hold that much oil in the sump?

Please say 'no'. Yesterday's oil change was after only about 200 miles in order to verify a bad dipstick. Using Z-Rod oil so a do over is another $50 and just a tad of pride swallowing.

Well you should only check on a flat surface, but not uncommon for dipstick to be wrong. Someone may have changed it out. I would simply mark at correct oil level and carry on...

By any chance is it chrome? Lord knows what the measurement is on those chrome dipsticks. You really need to invest in a pair of ramps with a 2 X 12 stepper board under those. Much safer, easier than jacks.

Hi N,
The NCRS TIM&JG has some information about the configuration of the dipstick.
You might check yours to see if it's the correct one for your 68, 327.

From the 'flange' to the 'full' line:
20 5/16"
From the 'flange' to the 'add' line:
20 59/64"

Regards,
Alan

how much are you draining out and how much are you putting back in?

to answer your question- No you cannot hold an extra quart in the sump by simply jacking up 1 side of the car. the way the drain pan is designed on the 327 i really doubt you could hold any oil in it at all.

oil and filter change should be 5 quarts- my 68 327 is dead on full with 5 quarts.

You could have had a few ounces left by jacking from the side but I don't think you would have what you are indicating on the stick. What do you consider the "proper amount?" If more than 5 you probably have too much if the pan is stock. Did you change the filter? If you changed the filter and you put in 5 quarts and it reads very high on the stick, I would suspect the stick is marked incorrectly. If you did not change the filter and added more than about 4.5 quarts you are probably over filled.

I have over filled about .5 quart by accident. I backed the drain plug out slowly until I got a small stream of oil. I caught it in a can that I had marked at 8 ounces. I had to catch two cans full but I got it down to the correct level.

I use a crib under the tire and a stand for supplement - rather than ramps to avoid a cold start only to drive up a ramp. I did not replace the filter this time in order to reduce the variables (again, only a couple hundred miles since the last change). I removed almost exactly one gallon and added exactly one gallon. I checked the fill level on a level surface after bringing the car down - about six times. The dipstick appears OEM. I marked the fill level with a file on the backside for now. Thanks for all the help; I appreciate it. I will measure the dipstick.

If he does not have an aftermarket pan.. or using a short vs long filter. and have a good clean engine where the drainbacks are not sludged up, and he takes a level reading immediately after shutting off or waiting a while for drainback.

somewhere close with good pressure thruout the normal rpm range, is ok.

That's the easiest way to find out if the tilt will hold that much oil. IMO, that IS your problem. Once the car is level, it should drain an additional pint to a quart of oil.

Perhaps it is the problem, 7T1vette, but I won't know that until I spend another $50. For now I measured the dipstick. My stick is 19 5/8" from the 'flange' to the 'full' indicator. It is supposed to be 20 5/16". This is a difference of 11/16". The difference between my 'full' indicator and my oil level as measured is only 7/16". According to the NCRS JG, I should have ANOTHER 1/4" of oil in addition to the 'overfill' I've already completed.

The NCRS refers to the 'flange'. I presume that means the edge that seat on the tube as indicated in the red line in this photo. Agree?

You'd have to check with NCRS to know for sure....but that looks like the 'flange' to me.
