I hate the long chrome shifter with ball for a shift **** on my 73- want to shorten the rod length and trade out the chrome ball for a wood **** used in the 84-96 models...Suggestions??

Yeah, buy a wood **** from one of the vendors in Amazon or E-Bay.
Shift effort will increase proportionally to the change in length of the shifter. But, no problem with doing what you intend. Shift **** screws on/off. Thread is 3/8"-16 NC, if I remember correctly.

Thank you, went ahead and bought the 84-96 Vette wood shift **** off eBay, also want to shorten the shift rod length - gotta do some engineering...
Don't know about '73's but on my '71 I changed the stroke of my stock shifter by relocating the shifter rods from the shifter to the levers on the transmission to the short throw holes. Works great.
I love the metal ball. Makes a good weapon if needed.
