I just put my eng and 700r4 back in my '80 and the '82 cross member doesn't reach the trans mount. Is there a plate that goes between the trans and cross member? The orig '80 cross member is on the floor inline with the frame mounts. It won't work either.
The TH700R4's used in the '82 had the mount bolted onto the tail housing and that's why your TH700R4 doesn't reach. You'll have buy a tail housing with the mount pad or make a plate that bolts to your transmission case that extends back to the cross member and I seem to recall the bolt holes need to be spaced 4-1/2" apart.
I made a plate. It's 1/2" thick x 8" x 4". The hole spacing at each end is 1 1/2". Not sure what the spacing is between the transmission mount holes and the crossmember holes since I held it in place and marked it for drilling.
I did make sure the 4 holes are inline/square with each other since one of the crossmember's jobs is drivetrain alignment. I've got both engine mount bolts in but I believe the rear of the transmission is closer to the passenger side than it should be. The plate will line it up.
