On my 70 4-speed, the shifter mounts to a bracket and not to the transmission. Only the linkage attaches to the trans. Check yours - may be the same. There is a shifter bracket separate from the transmission. This is different then other 4 speeds I owned earlier such as a 67 Camaro. In that case the shifter bolted to the trans.

If it is the factory shifter it mounts to a bracket which bolts to the crossmember. If it is aftermarket, such as Hurst, it will bolt to the side of the transmission.

Hi c71,
Are you asking about bolting the shifter to the bracket or bolting the bracket to the crossmember?
The shifter body mounts to the shifter bracket with 2 bolts.
The upper bolt (the longer bolt) extends through the shifter body.
The lower bolt (the shorter bolt) only passes through a 'tab' extending down from the SHIFTER'S frame.
Regards,
Alan
