I'm considering replacing my stock advance weights in my distributor with a "curve kit". My understanding is that it advances the engine at lower rpms and can give a power boost at those levels.
Is anyone using these and do they work as expected?
A re-curved distributor doesn't always mean more or faster advance. It is a means to tailor the distributor's advance curve. Read Lar's paper on this topic at http://www.corvettfaq.com for a good understanding on timing advance and how to set up a distributor. It's easy but a little knowedge is heplful or you can damage you engine.
