VIN Plate missing
I am looking at a well used 81 and noticed the vin plate was gone. Is the VIN number located anywhere else on the vehicle? Thanks in advance for your responses.

The vin number is located in a few different places, but if the car you are looking at does not have some type of government issued tag riveted to the door jam, don't spend any more time on it. My 78 was in an accident that required a replacement for the part of the frame that has the tag on it. But it came with a tag from the state of Alabama with the correct vin number on it. There are lots of discussions of how that replacement tag affects values, and in my case that was not an issue, I didn't really care. But I also checked with a few government agencies to make sure it was not a stolen car.

On the drivers side top frame rail by the #4 body mount it is stamped.
Not very easy to see, but with a little luck, a light, and a small mirror
you just might get lucky.
The other one cant be seen with the body on the frame as it's located on the top of the frame rail, drivers side again to the left of your seat.

Even as a parts car it is a little scary. Did he show you a title with a vin on it? The car itself could be stolen, OR that vin tag itself may be residing on the windshield frame of a car that IS stolen, and as such already registered to somebody that doesn't know he owns a hot car.

FYI VIN tampering is a federal offense. If you pick up the car and it turns out to be stolen, in the eyes of the law you have willingly purchased stolen property.
Run, run away.

Thanks for replies. The owner showed me where the State of NH issued a VIN on a tag placed in the driver side door jam issued by the NH state police and issued a NH registration. The car was assembled from 2 .

That is a little different. We'll used 81. So it is in the 1 to 3k range? And why would you want it even without vin issues? The only less valuable Vette is a well-used C4.

because it is sporting a very nice 383 stroker that runs quite nice, holley dual pumper, all stainless exhaust, new brakes, new tires, and is under $5k.i think it has possibilities.

read the 10 rules sticky and inspect the frame, birdcage. but a lot of the money that these cars vacuum out of our pockets may well have already been spent on this guy. but beat him down to 3k if you can.

The blemished vin/title us a huge issue for most and even those of us who do not care know it really stabs the value,
Great at buying time we get a lot of car for less toad pelts but then if we sell we have to lower the price too, so it does even out in the end, we get our money back through use,
I have a sweet restored 87 fiero gt, with rebuilt title, a 5-6k car i got for peanuts,
I researched it, after learning the state does inspections that are pretty tough i was okay,
I would buy a certain custom 68 if the price reflected the blem title status,
So in the end if it doesnt matter to you and the price is adjusted have a blast with the car,
