I'm looking at putting a 454 in my 1980 Corvette. I'm being told to make sure the oil pan is a big block corvette pan. Can anyone tell what the difference is, Thanks
As opposed to what? What style is on your engine now? Chances are they are talking clearing the steering
The vettes had a 5qt pan with a single step in it (to clear the steering linkage mainly I would think) so you would also need a deeper sump with it. There were also the trap-door slosh baffle system and the drain plug is not in the center.
Chevelle also used a single step pan but I think they were only 4 qt

On my 468 I ended up running a Moroso street/strip pan with the kicked out sump in the back with the appropriate oil pump pickup. I believe it is a 6qt + 1qt in the filter pan. The problem is usually with the steering components (clearance), it starts to get pretty tight up there with everything in place.
You can still buy the correct 65-74 Corvette big block oil pan, direct from Chevrolet, or through any number of internet sources. This pan has the trap door, and comes with a windage tray, but not the tray's 4 mounting studs (the part number for the studs is 39022885).
The pan's part number is 14091356, and it will clear the power steering slave cylinder, because it was designed to be used with the 63-82 Corvette frame. The only difference between this pan, and the one that Chevrolet installed on Corvettes in the 60's and 70's, is there use to be reinforcement plates in the corners of the pan. GM must have found that the reinforcements weren't necessary, since they did away with them years ago.
Summit and others sell the pan for about $171.00.

I didnt catch the word corvette in the OP's first post. Gave me the impression he was getting in over his head. My response was a little demeaning.
I'm not sure if this post was meant for me because my post clearly states Corvette. Two members get talking between post and off subject. I'm definitely not over my head. Wait till you see my next project and I cut the top off and make it a convertible.

Jim (427Hotrod) posted a pan and part number a while back that works on the vette and has documented HP increases on the dyno to go with it. Its a Miladon pan but I don't remember the part number I thought the part number ended in 333 but I don't find a pan with a part number ending in 333, may have to get in touch with Jim.
Right now I'm running a cheap chrome pan with kick outs on both sides with no issues. When I had the stock steering it was close but worked, now I have R&P and it still works.
