I have a 1974 corvette. A new distributor w/tach drive, a Powermaster XS starter, and a Jet stage 2 carburetor 750 CFM, and a new battery cable was recently installed on my car.

my problem is when after starting the car (either cold or warm) the RPMs will suddenly drop and then return to a normal level. it happens both at idle and when the car is moving.

Have you checked float level ?

And verifying that your fuel pump is doing its job. And making sure the fuel hose that comes off the main fuel line on the frame is not being sucked shut due to the wrong one is used...and it may have a kink in it.

And I would also wonder about your distributor....in regards to the vacuum advance.

When you start the engine when it is COLD....does your carb go to fast idle??? It appears that the carb you have looks like a QuadraJet. Am I correct???

I had this issue on my 81. Found I had a bad ground at the distributor.

In addition to the above, I would also check choke flapper to see if it's closing on it's own. If you set the choke so it's slightly more open when it's cold it may go away.

On thing to also check is the sock on the fuel pickup in the tank.
