Rear suspension removal tips
Going to clean up and paint everything. Have to install new stub axles and was hoping the pros here could give a little help. Specifically, how to get that spring outta there without killing myself. I've seen some serious cobbling together of various jacks used in the forums and no way want to try my luck with that accident waiting to happen!!
Does someone make a nice handy tool for this surgery?
Suggestions? Help.....!?
Thanks!!

Hi CB,
Here's the information and photo for removing the rear spring from the 71 Chassis Service Manual.
It uses a jack, c-clamp, and block of wood.
I use a c-clamp, 2 blocks of wood, a floor jack, and a short length of 2x4. I also wrap the spring with padding to protect the spring's finish from the clamp and length of 2x4. Although the CSM info explains to some degree the purpose of clamp and block it doesn't state that the clamp prevents the jack from sliding toward the center of the spring while the jack is being raised.
You DO have to be very careful because there's a lot of energy stored in the spring when it's loaded.
Regards,
Alan

Burning Brakes
Potential energy can be a bitch. Take care, follow the directions above and you will be fine.

Well I'm in the process of trying to install new link bolts and cushions.
When I raise the spring up the link bolt binds up by tilting forward.
It is like the spring is too far to the rear.
Does this spring have a forward and backward when mounted? It seems like the spring ends are a little rearward of the link bolt holes for alignment.
