Hey all!
Because of my 489ci build up I wanted to have an exhaust with no restriction, and loud! Since the stock 69 sidepipes are restricted, I had to build one by myself.
The headpipes and stock style exhaust tips with 2,5" diameter you can buy at highfloperformance.com. Special thanks to Ryan Westdorp from this company!
The mufflers are from classicchambered.com, special thanks to Eric Sauls for his support. I choosed the full chambered 2540-Vette mufflers. They have 2,5" id and 3,5" outer diameter. It´s thight, but it fits.
In a few weeks I can make a test drive and then I can tell you how loud the mufflers really are and if I notice any gain in performance.
I noticed some paint loss in the grooves on the sidepipe covers. That is pretty easy to fix if you are interested.
Ideally, strip the old paint with a liquid stripper; or you can just brush off the loose stuff, if you want. Clean areas to be painted with soap, water and dry completely. Shoot a couple of covering coats of semi-flat or satin black paint (I like John Deere Blitz Black). After 3-4 minutes, wipe the paint off the outer surface of the ribs using a clean cloth with lacquer thinner (damp, not wet). With each wipe, adjust cloth to clean area.
Let dry. If the cover needs Hi Temp paint, use satin black VHT spray paint. After drying, the heat will cure it to a ceramic-like coating.
The pipes sound great and your ride looks awesome with the wheels and side pipes .Beautiful color against the snow in the back ground .I got some new side pipes and was disappointed when they were so quiet. I was going to run 3" straight pipes but yours sounds just right and would love to hear it when driving .Nice job Gunther .
There isn't any Aftermarket side exhaust system that looks as Good As The Factory C3 Side Pipes. I know to made your own pipes but the Factory Covers Look The Best.
Update:
after a few rides with the full chambered mufflers I decided, to exchange them. They are really verry (!) loud, I didn´t like the sound at WOT and was missing the deeeep BigBlock rumble. So I got in contact with Eric and told him my issues. He recommended me a special custom muffler he could build for me. It would be a VettePack muffler with a 16" chambered section and 24" resonator section.
And here is the result: I love it! Deep BigBlock rumble at idle and a really cool sound at WOT. Still loud because of the 2,5" core, but not too loud.
Here some pics and videos:
Out of curiosity, if your reason for not running stock-style side pipes is exhaust restriction, why are you running exhaust manifolds instead of headers?
