Default Diff whine

I removed the diff from the car to replace the pinion oil seal. Went ok all considering. Now under acceleration it sounds good, but when I lift my foot off the accelerator there is an audible whine coming from the diff. The pinion nut was torqued to 11in-lb. While out of the car the diff rotated smoothly and there was no excess play. Any suggestions?

Did you count the number of turns to remove the nut? It should have gone back on the same number of turns.

It's an 81 diff and read that the torque was more important than the turns. So the turns didn't quite line up under the torque, would have had to increase the torque.

Ok. Thought it was a "74 since that's what's in your profile.

Actually it is a 74. So I brought a 74 seal and it didn't come close to fitting. Contacted the previous owner and he had put an 81 diff in it!!!

Over run noise is a pain,
11 in lbs Does not sound right to me, however you have a noise and that’s telling you something is wrong, you need to check the patterns drive and over run.

i believe the torq rating is to turn the whole yoke not the nut.

the diff casing is aluminium and there are some minor modifications, though a little questionable. So if my torque setting is to turn the yokes what is the torque for the spline nut?

none.
the idea is the yoke presses and a crush sleeve which
presses the tapered bearing which needs a load
measured by turning resistance.
the nut is used to load the tapered bearing to the turning resistance.

The 80-82 diff use shims not a crush sleave, as long as the shims are still there it's fine. The nut still needs to go back to around the same position. (Not as critical as the older iron diffs) and turning torque checked.

good to know.
turning torx preload is the thing.
