Hey guys, I have an odd one. When I arm the alarm using the driver's side lock, everything appears to work. A few hours later, the alarm just goes off on its own. I've replaced the hood switch and t-top switches, but as far as I can tell, the door switches are original. I searched through the forums to see if anyone has had a similar problem, but no luck. Any advice or points towards previous threads would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
We all gave up on those factory alarms LONG ago. The issue I believe is the arming switch inside the door but I could be wrong. You can fix it a few times then disable it some day in the future like the rest of us.
I would pick up a Viper alarm to install yourself and disable the factory alarm. I did it on my 81 and now I have remote door locks and no need to pull out a door key to unlock. They also come with a inline starter kill, blinking car lights, siren, 2 remotes, built in shock sensor. I picked one up for $59.99 and installed over a weekend. They are available on Ebay or Amazon.
There was a thread a month or so ago and a member was rebuilding the alarm system and re-drilling the key hole in the rear body panel because the alarm had been disabled by a prior owner and the member was restoring it back to original.
I don't recall the name of the thread or who started it, but I do remember it had some good info.
Another piece of the puzzle besides the on and off door switch, is the 2nd switch in the door that is up against the lock cylinder that will sound the alarm if the cylinder is tampered with by a thief.
Perhaps this has loosened up through the years and moved some and is getting a little "touchy" between being on and off in its current location. Just a thought.
I put a new switch in my 77 door a few years ago. I had to use a dremel to remove some contact material in the switch so that I could actually have a little more room between it being set to the on and the off position.
