Need to replace broken sport mirror on my '77 but glass is in the way of reaching mirror nuts on inside of door. Can glass be loosened and moved out of the way or will it need to come out?
The door glass needs to come out...or at least I have never found way to allow the door glass to stay in the door and do this....and TRUST ME..I have tried.

I managed to get old one off (2 hrs) but no way will new one go on without removing window, problem is my car must be different than my book because it won't come out the way they said to.
Not knowing how they are telling you to remove the door glass ..I can not comment on what IO am not aware of.
I DO know how to take out the door glass.
If you can not find the needed information to do this..and you need help. PM me and I can get you my shop phone number and you can call me and I can talk you through it.
OR...if someone can send you to an old thread that clearly describes how to do this or possibly get on Willcox Corvette site and see if they have a tutorial on how to remove/install it. I know that I do not have the time to type it all out when talking on the phone in a few phone calls can get it done much faster.
May have a solution, drilled holes in 7/16" socket (not easy, broke 3 bits and wore out 3 more), if that doesn't work see that socket holder may just fit between door and glass to tighten nut.
I HOPE your idea works...but I do have my doubts. I know one of the studs and nuts is basically assessable...but the other one is the problem due to the window track is in the way.
Mirror is now painted so tomorrow I'll try and get it back on car. I posted in General discussion about getting paint matched at Home Depot (local auto paint store couldn't match, don't have a paint scanner). Ended up buying a quart of Behr water based high gloss enamel that is perfect match and looks like it may work...at least for now. Painted mirror; most of driver's door; around where mirror mounts on passenger door; nose and other paint chips.
Topped off with clear so once entire car is buffed out should be good to go.

Just be careful. I see that you painted the threaded studs that hold the mirror on. That paint can act like threadlocker and cause your nut to seize up. I would clean that paint off an test the nuts FIRST before you got to put them on.
Also I would use a very small drop of removable threadlocker on the two screws that hold your mirrors pieces together. If you do not have that and want a second option...you can use RTV silicone. Just a as long as you have something that can prevent that screw from loosening....or you will doing this all over again in time.

I do not know if I can follow that procedure due to I would need to get socket in there and verify that I truly got them tight. I know I can get the front stud nut...but the one that is being slightly obstructed by the door glass. I would have to come up with something.

If you do come up with something I would surely like to know. Hope to paint entire car in year or more so both mirrors will need to come off. But for now can't complain.
