When installing a new timing chain/gear set on a 69 then cylinder 1 has to be in TDC, and the crankshaft dot has to be @12 and the camshaft gear dot has to be at @12 also right?
If crankshaft dot is @12 and camshaft dot is @6 it is TDC for cylinder 6 right?
yes
when the dots line up
crank dot on top and cam dot on bottom is
#6 firing.
so remember to turn for number 1 for dist.
be aware of a 3 keyway crank gear.
1 for 0 1 for 4deg adv 1 for 4deg retard

Yes but even if you choose to install the timing gears (dot to dot) on the #6 TDC the camshaft and crankshaft will still be in proper mechanical time....
You will just have to turn the engine over a few times to get it up on #1 TDC to correctly install the distributor...
It won't matter which one of those methods you use to install the timing set... you can use the 12 and 12 method or the dot to dot method, because you are going to need to turn the engine over many times after bolting the timing set on.... for example when adjusting the valves.

BTW yes, as I remember it, the key for 0 is approx. @ 02.00 right?
