I put one in mine last year (fresh engine, carb), but the car is not really on the road yet - just a few quick jaunts up the street. I noticed right away that it started much quicker and smoothed out the idle. On the other hand, as I approach official roadworthiness, I am beginning to get a little concerned based on MANY negative comments I have seen about people getting stranded, etc. What I am now VERY sure of is that I will ALWAYS have a set of fresh points and the tools to convert back in the car. The first time it dies, it will be gone.
I haven't done it on a Corvette, but my 67 500 Shelby was always kinda hard to start, especially when hot and didn't idle real well either. I put yet another kit in both carbs and finally put a new set of carbs from Holley which they sell as replacements for all the FE engines that came with 2 4's from the factory. The new carbs did help the driveability some but the car was still unpleasant at times. The Pertronix made a different motor out of it. I don't know why all the difference, but it cranks and idles as it should. The first day I had it in, I went through a yield sign in second and realized a car was coming faster than I thought. I went down on the gas and it lit the tires. This car has never been responsive like this before. I don't have a lot of miles on it, but I'm 100% sold. I bought their recommended coil also.
Only thing is you have to give 5 seconds with key turned on to "charge" before turning engine over. Some reason it needs to be energized or engine turns for few seconds before starting. Other thing is they only last 3 years of daily driving, so you can be stranded if you dont watch for the signs of it starting to fail.
