On a car whose speedometer cable has never been replaced, is it attached with clips for example, anywhere on it's journey from the transmission to the gauge cluster? I'm asking because I am attempting to move the the driver's side lower dash pad backwards to get room enough to install panel lights. Thanks. I can reach the clip that holds the cable end to the speedo gauge, but I am almost positive that even if I could pull on the cable to free it after pushing the clip, that that would be the biggest mistake I'd ever ever make even if I lived to be 500. Thanks
The speedometer cable should be attached to the underside of the car in several places before it connects to the transmission to prevent it from being pinched or touching the exhaust pipes.
Sometimes you have to wiggle the cable once the speedometer retaining clip is released so the speedo cable will "let go" from the speedo housing, and the guage cluster can be moved away from the dash.
My idea was to leave the speedo attached and just pull it along with dash pad like I'm doing with the tach cable. But I was able to get the cable detached and looks like it should not be too hard to reattach it later.
On my 72 auto there's a joint in the cable down just below the front splash shield. The upper cable is routed behind the splash shield but I don't know if it should be or not. Then there's a clamp (just a squished over band like those on the firewall holding wires)
I believe the standard shift cables are one long cable
