Hi to all, need some help. Car - 1970, 454 with AC. Is there anyway to measure the amount of oil in the compressor without taking the compressor out and draining and re-filling? Thank you in advance for any ideas.
Hey, good question. I think most of it is coating the internals or held in suspension. I'd say a complete vac and refill would be in order if you're in doubt.

That is the only way to know how much oil is in the compressor.
Pulling a vacuum on the system does not remove the oil, only any air and moisture in the system.
You can check it without loosing a charge. The plug on the pan is made to do that. It is drilled thru the center, then cross ways just under the head of the plug. The plug is above the bottom of the compressor oil pan.
You slightly loosen the plug and if oil squirts on your rag, you have at least 4 oz. If only a hiss of gas then you are low. Oil can be added thru the low side with the right equipment.
There is a procedure in the manual. I think it differs, but I believe I researched it in a 65 vette manual.
