Default Need help with 454 top end

A buddy of mine asked my help in selecting an intake and carb for his 454 in his ‘72. I have no idea since mine is a small block. I his lower end is stock except a 280/288 cam and it has 049 heads. His main concerns are reliability and fitting under the BB hood.

Much thanks

Not alot of options for a BB hood.

Stock, or 69 aluminum L36.

I used a LS6 intake and Quickfuel carb which fits under the BB hood.

I saw someone was making LS6 repos. Did you like it?

Edit: found it. http://cranescorvettesupply.com/71-c...ls6-454-425hp/

Would this carb be a good choice? https://www.holley.com/products/fuel...arts/HR-780-VS

That carb and intake would work well for that combo....There will be a port mismatch from the intake (rec ports) to the 049 heads (oval) but many have done this with no issues.

The LS6 intake is probably your best bet to fit under a stock BB hood. Use the LT1/L88 repro drop base air cleaner.

Much thanks, guys. Not that I think he can afford it, but would the other big C3 hood option give him more choices? L88?

FYI you will have to use Rectangular Port Intake Gaskets with that intake.

Otherwise as everyone has said, that intake and carb will work great on his combo.

I have a Weiand intake and QFT 750cfm carb on my 454 in a 68 convert with a repro "long" style bb hood. It fits with about 1/2 inch to spare using the drop base for the air cleaner. Weiand has both oval port and square port intakes for the 454.

Is that with a Weiand stealth and a L88 Hood? or a LT1/BB hood?

I had that same question. I’d rather have my ovals match.

Edelbrock also make a couple of options that are oval port and may fit under the stock hood using the drop base air cleaner. Their web site will note that these intakes will not fit on the Corvette, however the notation is for use of the stock air filter.

Ronarndt is using a long L88 hood.

The square port manifold is a mismatch but I still made good power.

Is this the correct base?

https://www.ecklerscorvette.com/corv...SABEgKuIvD_BwE

And this intake?

https://www.summitracing.com/parts/wnd-8019

Will the carb I posted work with it?
Those are nice numbers, DD
