I have an Edelbrock 1407 750cfm carb that was very dirty. I ordered a rebuild kit and rebuilt it last night, was my first rebuild. Everything went well, no "spare" parts. When I tried to fire the car back up it starts and immediately revs up super high (sounds like wide open) and then dies within 2 seconds. The only part I replaced, besides gaskets, was the accelerator pump that came with the rebuild kit. I turned the air/fuel mixture screws all the way in and then back out 2 full turns to try to set it to default. The carb has a manual choke and will crank and run with the choke on but really rough and will jump up to super high rpm as soon as I take the choke off. Any ideas on what to look for when I take the carb back apart? Maybe something stuck.
Are the throttle blades stuck open? Do you have fuel in the bottom of the carb? Float levels ok?
No way to really tell you what is wrong from here, but just start checking the basics. Make sure all linkage moves freely, make sure the throttle blades have full movement, make sure you have fuel. If no fuel, check floats and needle and seat.
Is choke stuck closed?
Verify all linkage with it put together moves freely.
Verify your floats are correct. Fuel level in the bowl is important.
Idle screws will definitely impact idle performance, but out 1 1/2 to 2 turns is a good place to start. They likely will need adjusting.
Accelerator pump should not impact idle at all.
