Default 1968 side pipe slip in mufflers

Replacing side pipes on a 1968 c3, and the slip in mufflers have about 3-4 inches of movement inside the side pipes. Side pipes are in all the way.

Factory pipes or aftermarket 4" Header side pipes (Hooker/Dougs)? I can tell you about aftermarket stuff, just did it last weekend.

If mine are sliding back and forth, I don’t hear it!

I just put the Hooker high flow muffs into my pipes, I wear ear plugs if i'm driving more than a few miles above 40mph (4.11 gears and 550ish hp), I think it's gonna make me deaf The old muffs were so bad I had to slit the side pipes to get em out, lost 5 pounds of rust (the pile was so big I had to weigh the stuff).

They are aftermarket. The side pipe fits over the header, and I thought the muffler inside of the side pipe should butt up to the header, but it doesn’t because it is about 3-4 inches short of that, allowing it to slide around in there.

I can make some measurements and take pictures, mine fit pretty snug and they only go in one way, The pipes slid onto the header about 3.5 - 4 inches and the muffs pretty much stop at the point the pipe expansion stops. let me know if pics or measurements will help. My headers and pipes are from Hooker, 1990's vintage, the muffs (Hooker high flow) were just purchased this month.

I can't hear anything either (for a while after I shut it off too), the high flow muffs are slightly quieter than open collectors (that was downright painful and won't be happening again unless I'm wearing ear plugs). But it's the price I pay for low restriction and it really made a big power difference over the old rusty small diameter glass packs (can spin the 295's from a 1500 rpm roll now with just a throttle snap, couldn't with the old ones).

You could try sliding them all the way to the rear--jammed against the bend--and use a little high temp silicone around the front edges.
Or some kind of a set screw.

Probably I am probably the only lunatic (bubba) here who made my own side pipes and baffled inserts. They sound incredible. I would have taken pictures but it looked like crap. I used baffles and the cone diffuser concept. I kept installing baffles and cones in till I got the sound I wanted. Look up Milan's Motor Sports on Facebook if your interested in listening to them. I was an interesting project. If and when they get loose, I just find some scraps and fab up new inserts.

Look at THIS POST and go down to #21 and #24 for my solution to the rattle. Your side pipe should slide about 4 inches up onto the header. Hope this helps.
