I am to the point I am ready for spring and I don't have a clue where to start but I only want to buy springs once.
Hears what I know, my car is a 68 427 390 4 speed coupe, hooker chrome side pipes, frame replace with 74 frame, front and rear factory sway bars approx 1 inch front and 3/4 inch rear , all poly bushing front and rear, 9 leaf rear spring,
Hears the question, i need to buy new front spring, I want the car to be fun on twisty roads, don't want a lumber wagon when driving around town. I don't mind replacing the rear spring either if anyone has any suggestions
If you are going to beef up your springs then you have a couple of choices for the rear, you can go with a 7 leaf spring that was the factory F-41, spring or go with one of the composite springs, sold by just about everybody.
Check the Zip Restoration store and you can find F-41 replacement front springs for less that $89.00 a pair. Plus if you order by Oct. 31, you'll get %10 off the total order. Check the recent post for the 10% off code. it is different than the normal CF-5 code, for our standard Forum 5% reduction.
IF your front swaybar is only 1" it's too small for a big block car, remember you carry more weight on the nose then a smallblock car will. I'd go 1 1/4 front bar with your 3/4 rear bar. If you run a bigger front bar you normally won't have to go quite as heavy on the front springs so your ride quality doesn't suffer but you keep your handling.
I have a small block with the 7 leaf rear w/ 5/8" sway and the 460 front springs w/ 1 1/8" sway. It gives me a good firm sporty ride. I did switch from poly back to rubber on the rear leaf cushions and sway bar end links to take the edge off.
