I know high perf pass doesn’t necessarily mean anything special but the A SS above that I don’t believe I’ve ever seen before. Also I can’t decode the stamping above timing chain cover if someone could please help.

That’s what was confusing me was the I’s, I couldn’t find anything like that. Everything I saw was numbers. What about *** above high perf....I don’t think I’ve seen that either.
Assembled at Tonawanda on the 18th of January. Either in a 1972 truck with a 402 or a 1974 truck with a 350. Obviously, with that pistons configuration, that is a 402.

"***" is supposed to be "PASS"; bad casting day for "P's" that morning I guess. (Or a practical joke on the quality control inspector on a Monday morning, maybe?)

I was quite surprised to find domed pistons when I took the 241 heads off. What do you guess compression was with this dome and 241’s? I’m hoping somewhere around 10:1 but being a trick I’m not optimistic.

this was common back in the 70s a lot of disgruntled auto workers I will agree with this quote I've seen a lot of weird things stamped on these blocks , on frames and in frames and bodies old vehicles back then. It should be "pass" "***" is a lot funnier. You engine block would be from a truck 402 big block which is a 396 bored 30 over. The piston are expressive this type of piston which if factory was used in high horsepower engine like the 396 425 horse but that would have to be paired with the correct cylinder head. I use the 396 425hp as an example. These were good engines. The 427 over shadowed them. But they were a god engine for all kinds of use.

what cylinder head head was used in the high horsepower 396-402’s
I don't remember the number off the top of my head. I'm not near my "corvette black book " but I think I an be found in the pages regarding 1965 corvette L-78 option if I recall should tell you what head was used.
