Use 75W-90 or 85W-90 gear oil (available at most auto parts stores... the original was probably 75W-90), but look carefully at the bottle and use GL-4 (NOT GL-5) as that formulation is safe for the bronze synchro's. or should say it is good for older gear boxes.

This is Paul, hes a Muncie God. Look up his videos and buy his book. Its all good info. The oil is explained at the 11.22 mark, but you should watch the whole thing

Paul is the man.

That said, I did not like the synthetic oil in my Muncie. It was louder and leaked easier. Went right back to 90W GL-4 dinosaur oil and never gave it another thought.

I used Royal Purple MaxGear 75w-90 synthetic, available at O’Reilly. It is compatible with the yellow synchros... and it’s expensive. I’ve heard similar feedback on synthetic but mine seems to be fine.

I’m sure a rebuilders opinion is worth much more than mine - and I agree the internet and marketing hype can be dangerous. I tried to make the best decision as it was probably the first change the trans ever got, and it won’t be changed for a long time again.

Use what you want to use.

Several years ago I did a lot of research on manual trans lubes. Stay away from API GL5 rated lubes. They contain an additive that will harm sycro rings in older transmissions. You need a GL4 rated lube. My 89 Bronco II was hard to shift in cold weather. I decided to go with a synthetic, Amsoil Manual Transmission & Transaxle Gear Lube 75W-90 Its just north of $18 a quart. The 150K+ 5 speed isn't perfect but it is a whole lot easier to shift.

I see some of the tranny lubes say gear oil and some say transmission only what is the difference? Have you found the multi use equal?GL4 Lube is hard to find because of the multi use labels

Some (newer design) manual transmissions use a light weight viscosity Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF). Older design transmissions frequently use a heavy weight viscosity gear oil. The best way to chose is stick with the owners manual on viscosity and classification.

My 2010 Camaro SS 6 speed manual uses Mobil1 Synthetic ATF that is equivalent to the old GM spec for Dexron3. Shifts great that way.

My 1969 Camaro uses good old 90 Weight GL-4 spec gear oil that is on the shelf at Autozone for cheap money. Shifts great too.
