I know this is really trivial, but in my service manual for my '79, it has information for both the 76mm AND 83mm manual transmissions....
I've done a search here, but can't find an answer.....HOW do I tell which one is in my car?? It IS the close-ratio 4 speed BW tranny.
I don't see any "rhyme or reason" as to why one would have been chosen over the other....ANY feedback would be appreciated!!
What exactly on the transmission do those two measurements represent?
Which service manual are you referring to factory or aftermarket?
The only close ratio from the factory in 1979 was the M21.
I believe, if memory serves me, the "76 or 83" is referring to the distance between the main shaft and counter shaft in millimeters. The 83 mm were stronger than the 76, because the gears were larger, or something to that effect.
If this is wrong, somebody please correct.
I had an 82 Z28 with the 83 (I think) and it was a close ratio, and with 3.42 limited slip rear, it was a lot of fun to drive.

I'm referring to the factory service manual. I KNOW the M21 is a CLOSE ratio tranny, cuz, as I said, it IS in my car....but it still doesn't answer my question regarding whether it is classified as a 76mm OR a 83mm!

U R correct....it IS the distance between the main & counter shafts! Again, mine IS the close ratio, w/ 3.7 rear ratio.
