Shifter Cable play!
Did the 2004r swap in my '76 and purchased a new shifter cable for the process. Now that it's installed I have at least 1/2" of play - front to back - with the shift lever before it changes gears. Is this normal? Is there a better quality cable than the one I got from Eckler?
Thanks
Thanks

There should be no 'lost motion' in the movement of the shift cable. That cable requires a cable retainer bracket at the end where the cable leaves its sheath. Is that bracket in place? If so, is that bracket flexing/damaged?

Here is a pic of the one that i purchased and installed. Is it the same one you are talking about? I don't see any place on either end for dialing in the cable. On the shifter end it is connected to the bracket with a "U" clip that holds it in place and the same by the trans. The bracket that bolts to the trans has a "U" clip that holds it in place but I don't see any adjustment place on either end. Am I not seeing it or is this a different cable?
Thanks

look on the transmission itself, the shaft you connect that cable to, the actual mounting point is moveable, at least mine is

I have made multiple adjustments at that point but still when I get inside the car and grab the shifter I can move it forward and back at least 1/2" regardless of what gear it is in.
