Default 77 starter removal

Hey guys

I'm disconnecting as much parts as possible, so I have more room for cleaning and painting the engine of my 77.
It's an L48.

-Exhaust is completely gone.
-Battery is decoupled.

Can I just remove the bolts and wires, and be done with it, or are there certain things to do before I remove it?

Nothing special. Remove the wires and bolts and it will come right out. It is heavy so be ready for it when you loosen the bolts.

Take some masking tape and a felt pen, label every wire where it goes. Then take a picture. Even the best of us have put the wrong wire back on the wrong post sometimes.

Shouldn't be any shims, but watch for them too. Great time to swap out the solenoid. They're cheap, easy to swap, and are prone to fail at the worst times.

What type of solenoid is used for the starter? Thinking of replacing the old one as you suggest.

Heck if you are going that far ...might as well take off the end cap of the starter and look at the brushes also...because the solenoid is not the only part that can go bad...and might as well look at the bushings in the end cap and also the snout....and look for wear on the Bendix due they are also known to do that...which just about makes it worth rebuilding. Don't stop at one replacement part...go all in or nothing.

Actually if you have repair shop in your area that rebuilds starters and alternators..i would take ti to them instead of getting another starter from an auto supply house.

I 've been impressed with NAPA solenoids. If they offer three units / three price options, I usually go in the middle or best one. Shy away from the cheapo.
