Looking at gm short release bearings on summit racing. by application for a 71 vette. there seems to be a lot of different heights on these bearings. does anyone no the actual height of the genuine Gm bearing that came in these cars ?. the bearing that came with my mcleod kit is 1.225" overall length. the hays 70-104 is 1.475" the mcleod 3-way adjustable bearing part # 16505 is 1.345--1.530--1.700
1 7/8 is the long bearing. vettes take the short bearing. looks like from what I have read. the short bearing that came stock. were 1.246" around 1 1/4
The prevailing wisdom is that there were basically two heights of release bearings in GM vehicles. My buddy who works in the parts department tells me that isn't true and I don't know enough to argue with him. The one I used with my Centerforce clutch was short - about 1 1/4". I also used an adjustable pivot ball to fine tune things. If you do a search there is some excellent literature on this site (and around the web) on the correct clutch linkage geometry.

I discovered my 621 bellhouse had the wrong clutch ball in it. it was 1 3/8 total length. it is suppose to be 1.5" long. I replaced with correct one. and a new clutch fork and it shifts like new now. from what I read the 1 3/8 clutch fork ball is not a normal size ball for a chevy ? and they were put in 66 vettes by mistake and recalled. ? my car is a 71 small block and I don't think iit came with the 11" 621 bellhouse. maybey it came from a recalled 66 I don't no ?

Yeah I don't think there is any shortage of ways to screw up the clutch linkage. I've found the best way is to do some research, find out what the appropriate measurements are, and shoot for those. I have used several Centerforce clutches with good results and they supply instructions with their clutches that any idiot could follow. (Must be true - I got it right.)

Chevrolet has used only two sizes of throwout bearings for decades - 1-7/8" for passenger cars and trucks (flat-finger clutches), and 1-1/4" for Corvettes (bent-finger clutches).
