I thought I had an exhaust leak but now I think its a lifter making ticking noise. previouse owner had 454 totally rebuilt to way it came from factory but he upgraded the pistons. I believe there is around 2500 miles on rebuild. are the lifters supposed to be adjusted after a rebuild and if so is it something anyone can do or is there a lot involved? if not, can someone explain steps? sounds like its just one lifter.
wel I was wrong, I just checked under manifold header and saw black from an exhaust leak. I can also feel air shooting out. I tightened it but it still leaks. I guess I have to change gasket. Have to remove alternator also I guess since a bolt is barried there. Happy it’s not a lifter though.
Double up on the gaskets...red RTV sealant between the 2 gasket.....I use Felpro blue gaskets...never have had an exhaust leak since I started doubling up on the header gaskets
Buy locking header bolts or they will always loosen up. I hate headers for all the leaks they have
Here is another trick besides the double header gasket technique:
Any grade 8 header bolt, without using the locking tabs, will stay tight..You do not need to use the locking tabs. The grade of the header bolt will dictate whether it loosens over time or not. How do I know?
I had a set of locking header bolts with the locking C clips for a set of mustang GT shorty BBk headers that were an absolute bear to install....After I doubled up on the header gaskets I decided to install the grade 8 bolts WITHOUT the Clips because I was fed up with the whole install procedure. Guess what? After 2 heat cycles of tightening the grade 8 bolts, they have NEVER loosened again. I now use high grade 8 bolts for all headers with double header gaskets. All header leaks have ceased and not come back. Do not use the cheap header bolts with headers...they are junk and will leak. Buy grade 8 header bolts, tighten them over a few heat cycles, and no more loose bolts. USE double header gaskets as well-not only prevents leaks but seals warpped header flanges tight.
