Default block huggers

Anyone installed block huggers in their corvette? I am wondering how the old exhaust will connect to it as the hugger comes with an adapter straight out of the box and it doesn't have a gasket that would fit a tapered pipe.

Block huggers pull in tighter to the block (hence the name) than the rams horn manifolds they replace....so you will need to take it to an exhaust shop and have them tie it in to the existing pipes.

Hi Jebby, thank you for your reply, isn't this something I can do at home? Is there welding involved?

Yes......you would need to weld at the flange/collector/adapter........
I have made downpipes for block huggers in the past......I buy several 90/45/15 degree bends from Walker exhaust through Summit racing......but you need skill and patience to do so...and a welder.
There is a dude here who is updating his 77' Vette and used flex exhaust tubing to tie it in to get across town to the exhaust shop.......great idea......but the flex is not a long term option as it rusts easy, almost always leaks, and looks like crap.
Do you have an exhaust shop near you?

Answers can be found in Search. There is one model from Jegs that looks like it comes close to fitting the standard doughnut connection but I would not expect any performance improvement as that collector is tiny. And then there are the 81-82 factory headers that bolt right up (no performance improvement and have to weld up the AIR ports). The McJacks are bolt in but are very pricey.

Hi Jebby,

Thank you for the info, I do have several exhaust shops around and will keep in mind to get there once the time arises.

I was wondering if you could tell me two more things: Is it ok to use Brazing to attach the new flange to the exhaust pipe? And does the smallblock use metric bolt sizes?

No....braze will not hold....brazing fills two metals but does not fuse them.
SBC fasteners are Standard thread.
