Default Battery gauge not working

IveI been looking to buy an 80 to 82 Vette and in almost every one the battery/alternator gauge is broken. Is the problem usually with the gauge, wiring or the sender. Please advise if you can

More than likely the printed circuit behind the cluster.

You can repair them sometimes when not too far gone.

Voltmeters rarely fail. It's this board and the plug that goes into it falls apart after years. There is no sender per say.
