Default Car won't turn over

Last night I accidentally shorted out a heavy wire on the alternator. I reattached it and now I get nothing. No headlights, no fans, no starter engaging or working - nothing. Can it be I blew a fusible link at the starter? Thanks

At starter or horn relay. Stop trying to weld with the alternator wire. Only works on McGuyver.

Assuming your car is a 1976 ....

DO NOT LOOK....the photo shown above DOES NOT work for your car due to you do not have a horn relay like what was shown.

Your horn relay is located by your fuse panel inside the car and looks nothing like the one in the photo..

The fusible link is at your starter.

And I guess that you still do not have an assembly manual for wiring diagram???

Your wiring diagram DOES show the fusible links. It willnot say 'fusible link'. Younee dot know how to understand howe GM describes a fusiblelink ina wiring diagram.

First off you need to find the one that is bad with an ohmmeter, volt meter or test light. Often times you can see where it burned but NOT melting through the special coating on the fusible link.

You can get fusible links from NAPA or any place that sells automotive wire and you will either need to buy a spool of it or if you are lucky in the 'HELP' section of some auto parts stores...they may have lengths of the CORRECT GAUGE of fusible link you need. Not just any gauge fusible links will work.

MAKE SURE you put the fusible link in at the SAME LENGTH as possible. And crimp them into a half lengthened butt connector in PARALLEL. NOT IN LINE If you need more understanding in this 'Google it' or ask.

Post good photo of your wiring diagram and I ( or others) can show you where the fusible links are shown.

The 10 gauge red wire will take a 14 gauge fusible link. The 16 gauge black wire will take a 20 gauge fusible link.

what's confusing me is that since there are 2 fusible links at the starter, one must be for the horn relay, right?

Thanks for the photo but the lighting on it could be better.

I assume your car has a factory HEI distributor in it???

Then this wiring diagram is not correct due to it is not like mine in the area of concern.

The wring diagram you have is for a car that has a points distributor in it.

It does show the fusible link...but it does not match your car in what I see in the photo of your starter. BUT...your photo DOES match my diagram..

OK, I'm back at it again. This picture shows the new 14 gauge (brown), and a new 20 gauge (gray) fusible link I attached. I still don't get any current to the key to turn the motor, and the horn doesn't work either - nothing everywhere.

The first picture is the terminal block that goes between the alternator and the starter. The second picture is on the firewall by the fuse panel. Are those two wires that are orange fusible links? Which one do I need to replace, and what gauge? Could the horn relay itself be bad and it needs to be replaced too? Thanks for putting up with me on this.

I'm not up on 76 model however Gm tends to connect the alternator to a common positive and back to the starter for charging.
so 12v at started and nothing at alternator, indicator an open circuit one of the links is open. some cars have a circuit breaker , that could be faulty usually on the firewall near the wiper motor drivers side.
If you have a multi meter or test light , check voltage at those links at the bulkhead fitting just probe into the fitting along side the wire entry .
then at the other end of link through the insulation.
